Anise microgreens have delicious licorice undertones and provide powerful vitamins and minerals that help heal your body. Anise has been shown to reduce the symptoms of mild to moderate depression, including postpartum depression.

Anise has also been shown to reduce the symptoms of menopause, including mood swings, bone loss, and hot flashes. It also contains compounds that balance blood sugar levels and help fight inflammation. Chronic inflammation can damage your tissues and organs, resulting in a plethora of health conditions.

Anise microgreens also prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi thanks to their antimicrobial properties. It also reduces stomach acid secretion and protects against gastric ulcers.  Finally, anise helps produce healthy blood cells, protect against disease, and assists with growth, development, and metabolism.

Growing microgreens is extremely easy to do from the comfort of your own home. Follow our directions below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Anise Microgreens Regrow after Harvesting?

Very few microgreens will regrow after harvest. If you harvest your microgreens without cutting the lowest leaf off, there is a minute chance that it will regrow; however, the growth is usually stunted, and the taste of the microgreen is usually negatively affected.

How Fast Do Anise Microgreens Grow?

Depending on the type of anise microgreen seeds chosen, you can expect to harvest two to three weeks after planting. When the first set of true leaves form and the plants are approximately 2 inches tall, it is time for harvest. Simply trim your anise microgreens at soil level, rinse, and use immediately.

Growing Anise Microgreens

Here is the step-by-step process to follow when growing anise microgreens. Read each step carefully before you begin growing anise microgreens.

Soaking Anise Seeds

Anise microgreens do not need to be soaked before sowing the seeds in the growing medium.

Planting Your Anise Microgreen Seeds

Begin by placing a growing tray with holes inside a tray without holes. This setup will allow you to water your plants from below and avoid damaging the delicate seeds and plants.

  • Growing Medium or Coconut Coir – Fill the growing tray with holes approximately ¾ full. Ensure the growing medium is fine and no clumps remain. Spread the soil evenly across the entire tray.
  • Pat the Soil – Use something flat like another grow tray to gently flatten the soil without packing it and making it hard. You want the soil to be flat to ensure even distribution of the seeds. Slightly dampen the soil using your mister to prepare the soil for sowing seeds and improved germination.
  • Water the Soil – Before you sow the seeds, you want to evenly water the soil. Then, once the seeds are sown, water again using your mister. Allow the soil to absorb the water and then water two more times to ensure the seeds and soil has been adequately watered.
  • Sow Your Anise Seeds – Spread the anise seeds evenly across the soil to ensure that the roots have enough room to grow. You should sow seeds thickly, approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch apart. Press the seeds firmly in the soil and then cover them with soil or a humidity dome. You should use a heat mat to ensure the soil stays at the optimum temperature of 75°F for germination.

Growing and Caring for Anise Microgreens

To begin the germination process, you must place your seed in the dark. You want the seedlings to grown on long, slender stems. If you exposed them to light immediately, photosynthesis would begin, which would create thicker plants. Instead, you want your plants to stretch toward the light for a proper microgreen crop. Mist the seeds daily during the germination stage. The germination process typically takes seven to ten days, and this is the only time during the growth process that you will water from above.

  • Weight Your Tray Down – Place a tray with no drain holes on top of your seeds and weigh it down with a brick. This ensures your seeds properly root in the growing medium.
  • Check Your Seeds – On the fifth day, lift the over to ensure your seeds are sprouting. Then, place the tray and brick back on top of the seeds.
  • Full Germination – Full germination should occur within 7 to 10 days. It is now time to remove the tray and water your microgreens. From now on, you should only add water to the bottom tray. Limit the amount of water that you add to one cup once or twice a day.
  • Place Under Lights – It is now time to allow the process of photosynthesis to occur. Within a day or two, you will notice your microgreens have turned green.
  • Continue Daily Watering – You will want to continue daily watering until it is time to harvest. The time it takes until harvest will depend on the amount of light the anise seeds are receiving as well as how warm the ambient room temperature is.

Harvesting Your Anise Microgreens

Anise microgreens will be ready to harvest in approximately 17 to 20 days. When harvesting, use a sharp knife and cut your microgreens just above soil level.

Storing Anise Microgreens

The shelf life of anise microgreens is 5 to 10 days. As soon as you harvest your anise microgreens, place them in an airtight container or zip lock bag and place them in the refrigerator.

Serving Anise Microgreens

Wash your microgreens right before serving to remove any soil. Place the microgreens on a paper towel and allow to air dry.

Final Thoughts

Anise microgreens are extremely nutritious and offer a host of benefits. Anise microgreens have a delicious licorice flavor that you will enjoy and can be grown indoors when the growing directions are followed.
